Ounce of Prevention: OSHA Statistics on Construction Accident Deaths from Your Indiana Construction Accident Lawyer in Indianapolis

By John Daly on April 03, 2012

OSHA and IOSHA keep statistics on fatal construction accidents in Indiana and throughout the country. Unfortunately, your Indiana Construction Accident Lawyer has seen first hand the family devastation after a workplace fatality. Indiana Workers Compensation provides limited benefits, including last medical expenses, an inadequate burial allowance and a percentage of income for a limited time. Your Indiana Construction accident lawyer may be able to provide a more complete recovery with a claim against the general contractor, subcontractor, owner or product manufacturer.

OSHA provides the following information on its website:

Out of 4,070 worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2010, one-fifth (751 or 18.5%) were in construction.* The leading causes of worker deaths on construction sites were: falls, electrocution, struck by object, and caught–in/between. These "Fatal Four" were responsible for nearly three out of five (57%)construction worker deaths in 2010*, BLS reports. Eliminating the Fatal Four would save 431 workers' lives in America every year.

  • Falls – 260 out of 751 total deaths in construction in CY 2010 (35%)
  • Electrocutions – 76 (10%)
  • Struck by Object – 63 (8%)
  • Caught-in/between – 32 (4%)

Your Indiana construction accident lawyer has clients in Indianapolis, Bloomington, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Terre Haute and Evansville who have suffered serious or fatal workplace accidents.  I will address each of the Fatal Four in future blog posts. I just want all of you iron workers, masons, carpenters, laborers and other Indiana workers to know that we have experience in preventing construction accidents and obtaining compensation for those injured in them. Remember, at Golitko & Daly, WE GO TO WORK WHEN YOU CAN'T!
