Fatal Fall at River Ridge Could Have Been Avoided

Workers' Compensation

The fatal injury to construction worker Chinco Ortega at the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville Indiana could have been avoided using fall protection or a manlift. According to IOSHA, the fatality was confirmed Tuesday and Mr. Ortega was on a ladder as part of a roof decking crew. As ironworking is one of the most hazerdous of construction professions, and decking in particular, OSHA has a special section dedicated to fall protection in a decking zone. Requiring someone to work on a ladder when a manlift should be used frequently results in serious injury, and may be prohibited by the general contractor’s agreement with the site owner. IOSHA generallly takes 6 months to complete its investigation.
